How can we help?
Answers to the most common questions are below. If you’re stuck, email us and we’ll get back to you.
During an exam
“Work could not be saved”
Ask the candidate to stop typing and call technical staff. Don’t clear the session, delete the app or restart the iPad. The usual cause is the iPad running out of storage: free up some space, then tap Save.
The screen says “Session interrupted”
ExamType locks whenever it leaves the screen, for example if the Home Screen, Control Centre or a notification appears, or if the app or iPad restarts. The candidate’s work is already saved. Check the conditions are secure, enter the session PIN to continue, and note the interruption in your incident log.
The invigilator PIN has been forgotten
There’s deliberately no back door or reset, so we can’t unlock a session for you. Without its PIN, a session can’t be finished, printed or cleared. Always record the PIN in the invigilator log or the exams officer’s records, out of the candidate’s sight, until the session has been cleared. Never write it on the iPad, the desk or a sticky note.
It says “Too many incorrect PINs”
After five wrong PINs in a row, ExamType makes you wait before trying again: 30 seconds at first, doubling each time up to 15 minutes. The candidate’s work is safe. Wait for the time shown, then enter the correct PIN. Every wrong attempt is recorded in the session log, so check it if you think someone has been guessing.
Printing
My printer doesn’t appear
ExamType prints with AirPrint, so the iPad and printer need to be on the same network. If your exam iPads have no internet access, use an isolated centre network that the printer is also on. Test this before exam day.
We print centrally. Can we send the script somewhere else?
Yes. In the print panel, tap Share and save the PDF to Files, or send it to an app such as OneDrive. When the panel closes, ExamType asks whether the script was sent for printing. Choose Yes, it was sent and it’s recorded in the session log. Once it has been printed, check every page with the candidate present, record the verification, and only then clear the session.
What should a printed script look like?
A4 pages with 12-point, double-spaced text. Every page shows the centre number, candidate number, component code and candidate name, with “Page X of Y” in the footer. If you save the script as a PDF from the print panel, the file is named with the same details.
If anything is missing or cut off, don’t clear the session. Email us a photo of the page and we’ll help.
Setting up
How should our iPads be configured?
ExamType locks down its own editor, but the iPad itself needs Guided Access or supervised Single App Mode, with Apple Intelligence, Writing Tools, Siri, dictation and internet access turned off. The centre checklist lists every setting and test.
Can students practise before the exam?
Yes. Classroom mode, on the ExamType home screen, gives students the same strict editor without the PIN. Their work is saved on the iPad under their name. Classroom mode is unavailable while an exam session is on the iPad, so finish and clear any exam session first.
Does ExamType have spellcheck or a reader?
Not at the moment. ExamType is a strict word processor with all spelling and grammar help turned off, so it isn’t suitable for arrangements that need a spellchecker, computer reader or speech recognition.
