Privacy
Privacy policy
Last updated 28 October 2026. This policy covers the ExamType iPad app and the examtype.app website.
In short
ExamType does not collect personal data. Everything entered into the app stays on that iPad, encrypted. We have no servers that receive it, and there are no accounts, analytics or adverts.
Who we are
ExamType is made and sold by James Banks, in the United Kingdom. For any question about privacy, email [email protected].
What is stored in the app
Exam sessions
To run an exam, an invigilator enters:
- the centre number, candidate name and candidate number;
- the unit or component code and, optionally, the paper title;
- a session PIN, which is stored only as a salted hash, never as the PIN itself.
The app also stores the candidate’s typed answer and a log of session events, such as interruptions and printing.
Classroom mode
Students enter their name and a title for each practice piece. Practice work is stored separately from exam sessions and stays on the iPad until someone deletes it.
How it is protected
All of this is encrypted with AES-256 and stored only on the iPad. The encryption key is kept in the iPad’s secure keychain, can only be used on that device, and never leaves it. Clearing a completed exam session, or deleting a practice piece, removes it permanently.
Printing and saved PDFs
To print, ExamType creates a temporary PDF named with the candidate’s details and passes it to the iPad’s own print system. The app deletes that file as soon as the print panel closes. If staff choose Save or Share in the print panel, the copy they make is managed under the centre’s own policies.
Who is responsible for candidate data
The school or college decides what is entered into ExamType and is the data controller for it under UK data protection law. Because we never receive any of it, we don’t process it on the centre’s behalf. Centres should handle printed scripts and any saved copies under their own data protection and exam retention policies.
What we never collect
- No analytics, crash reporting or usage tracking
- No advertising or advertising identifiers
- No access to location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone
- No accounts or sign-in
Buying ExamType
ExamType is sold through Apple’s App Store and Apple School Manager. Apple handles payment and gives us only sales totals that don’t identify anyone. See Apple’s privacy policy.
This website
examtype.app has no accounts, forms, analytics, adverts or tracking cookies, and doesn’t load anything from other websites. Our hosting provider briefly keeps basic technical logs, such as IP address, browser type and time of request, to run and protect the site. If you email us, we use your message only to reply and delete it when your enquiry is resolved, unless we have a legal reason to keep it.
Children
Candidates and students may be under 18. ExamType is set up and supervised by school and college staff, and no candidate or student data is ever sent to us.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask to access, correct or delete personal data about you. Because exam and practice data stays on the school’s iPad, send requests about it to the school or college. For anything we hold, such as your emails to us, contact [email protected]. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Changes
If ExamType ever starts collecting data, we’ll update this policy before that version is released and change the date at the top of this page.
